Professionally, at the moment, I function as a GP in substance misuse in NHS clinics in West Yorkshire with occasional locum work in prisons, which is interesting in strange-ways.
I am in the third year of a PhD in the Department of Education at the University of Manchester, developing methods of critical discourse analysis using a mixture of political, psychoanalytic and linguistic theory, using e.g. Marx, Freud, Foucault. The object of analysis is broadly speaking the practice of Modern Medicine. My thesis being that Modern Medicine functions as a gendered psychopathy driven by a masculinised castration anxiety and inducing a feminised exploitation of the subject-patient. It is an attempt to use psychoanalytic approaches to discourse to provide a story for why good people do dangerous things.
